We'll drive up a steep military road (hooray!) to the Makua Valley rim, and then begin hiking on a contour trail which wanders leisurely along the rim for a couple of miles. The panoramic views of the coastline are fantastic! Cameras are recommended (also sunscreen).

We start near the Kuli’ou’ou state trailhead, but take a steeper less traveled  HTMC route.  It encircles the top of the valley, traversing a long stretch of the Koolau summit ridge, overlooking Waimanalo.  Be forewarned that this strenuous trail has some narrow precipitous sections.

Check out the interesting contour route that Dayle & Jacque added to this hike, based on Dick Davis’ old trail. The hike includes strolls through Friendship Gardens, as well as ridge and narrow trail scrambling.

You’ll warm up on a long road walk, cool your feet crossing a stream, then sweat a little as you traverse the landslide-prone slopes, crawl under fallen trees, balance on slippery moss covered rocks, climb steadily to the summit, then be rewarded with gorgeous panoramic views.

One of many trails in Moanalua Valley, this one climbs up to the ridge on the ewa side, and follows it nearly to the summit. At the lunch spot, the trail descends a steep side ridge, and joins the old Damon Estate road, leading us back to the trailhead.

One of the easiest jaunts to the Ko’olau summit requires a bit of huffing and puffing on the uphills, but the views of Waimanalo and Olomana in the distance are well worth it.
