HTMC: Likeke 7/3/11

Ramble across most of Waianae Valley, from the Lualualei overlook to Ala Kepau ridge (where the road and trail end). You'll see coffee, ironwood, lemon eucalyptus, allspice, sisal, and other strange sights, such as streams w/running water, terraces built by the ancient Hawaiians and the house site of the Waianae Plantation manager.  Just follow the yellow markers, or you may get lost at the many intersections.

This historic trail (1906) is an HTMC favorite. A series of gentle switchbacks lead to a summit notch, then the trail drops into a remote and misty valley, thence onward to Kaluanui Stream. Hardy hikers may continue beyond, for a glimpse of a tall feathery waterfall (clouds permitting).

Traverse the newly designated Pupukea Paumalu State Park Reserve, which has been saved from development by the North Shore Community Land Trust. HTMC donated to this cause a few years ago. Start from the Kaunala Trail in Pupukea, descending a ridge to old military pillboxes with stunning views of world famous surfing beaches including Pipeline and Sunset Beach, and ending the hike near ‘Ehukai Beach Park

This short hike is a moderately easy route up to the Ko’olau Summit.  The first portion is on an easy dirt road, which then turns into a fairly steep intermediate trail.  It can be slick and muddy, but some of the deep erosion trenches have been repaired.

Traverse the eastern spine of the Ko’olau range from Makapu’u point then descend to Waimanalo via an old Hawaiian kukini route, known to today’s hikers as the Tom-Tom trail. Rediscovered in 1922 by HTMC’ers Tom McGuire and Tom Cadle, the Waimanalo end of the “Tom-Tom” trail is still hiked by HTMC today.

We start this yo-yo hike from the top at the Manoa Cliff Trail out to Pauoa Flats, then switchback along the ridgeline makai almost to the houses. Next we reverse mauka along a pipeline to the old water catchment, cross a stream and angle up again above a high (and dry) waterfall back to our start. A great aerobic ridge-valley-ridge day in the forest.

Hike along two flowing streams, one on the way up and the other on the way down. Along the streams you will see pre-contact agricultural terraces as well as dams built by Waianae Sugar Company 100 years ago. Hiking across the upper valley you'll see both pre and post contact sites. There is one waterfall that is a bit dangerous but has a bypass trail around it.

Always be aware of the ocean swells which can unexpectedly rise up and snatch you off the shelf into the raging ocean. Don’t leave anything valuable in your car.

Description: First hiked back on July 3 of 1932, Koko Crater has since become our traditional New Year Day hike. Sunrise at Halona finds us eyeing the rock arch as we ant up the crater side to the rim.
