We always switchback up the pali, but at the top are numerous possible routes. Whichever one  we take this year, count on some road walking, trail hiking, good views, and plenty of ups and downs.

Traverse the eastern spine of the Ko’olau range from Makapu’u point then descend to Waimanalo via an old Hawaiian kukini route, known to today’s hikers as the Tom-Tom trail. Rediscovered in 1922 by HTMC’ers Tom McGuire and Tom Cadle, the Waimanalo end of the “Tom-Tom” trail is still hiked by HTMC today.

The trail to this series of small pools nestled between Waimano and Manana ridges makes a leisurely Saturday hike, except for Huff-n-Puff Hill on the way back. No skinny-dipping, so wear swimwear under your hiking togs.

We start this yo-yo hike from the top at the Manoa Cliff Trail out to Pauoa Flats, then switchback along the ridgeline makai almost to the houses. Next we reverse mauka along a pipeline to the old water catchment, cross a stream and angle up again above a high (and dry) waterfall back to our start. A great aerobic ridge-valley-ridge day in the forest.

Hike along two flowing streams, one on the way up and the other on the way down. Along the streams you will see pre-contact agricultural terraces as well as dams built by Waianae Sugar Company 100 years ago. Hiking across the upper valley you'll see both pre and post contact sites. There is one waterfall that is a bit dangerous but has a bypass trail around it.

If the tide and surf are low, we will take the coastal route. If not, we’ll take the safer paved road to the lighthouse viewpoint. On the coast, you can expect a couple of tidal pool crossings. Always be aware of the ocean swells which can unexpectedly rise up and snatch you off the shelf into the raging ocean. Don’t leave anything valuable in your car.

No Meeting @ Palace – Park @ Sandy Beach & Meet @ Blowhole Parking Lot

Distance = 3 miles

Description: First hiked back on July 3 of 1932, Koko Crater has since become our traditional New Year Day hike. Sunrise at Halona finds us eyeing the rock arch as we ant up the crater side to the rim. A cautious scramble clockwise gets us to our metal mesh lunch spot for a well deserved snack. Did you see the whales offshore?
