HTMC: Makapuu Tom-Tom 1/31/10

Jan 31 Sun 8:30 AM MEMBERS ONLY MAKAPUU TOM-TOM 100-Mi

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at the Clubhouse

(4 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Makapu’u)

Tread the footsteps of HTMC hikers who first did this hike on June 4, 1920. Not for the faint of heart, this is a steady grind up a rubbly slope and a traverse along the ridge line with steep drop offs.  Pause to see the magnificent views of the Windward Coast and Sea Life Park thru the hole in the rock.  Watch your footing as you descend steeply into Waimanalo, then a short walk to the HTM Clubhouse.

Coordinator Karen Liliker, ph 349-8336.

HTMC: Kuliouou Valley 1/30/10

Jan 30 Sat 8AM KULI’OU’OU VALLEY

(2 Mi/Novice/Valley/Kuli’ou’ou)

An easy walk in the woods as we follow the usually dry stream into the valley.  Keep watch for the nests of the elusive Elepaio high in the trees.  Perch on a fallen log to peck away at your lunch.

Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

The radar domes and the paved roads are new additions since this trail was first hiked by HTMC on November 27, 1927, but the panoramic views are unchanged.  As you hike this contoured (moderately level) dry-land trail around the rim of Makua Valley, let the miles and years slip away.

HTMC: Puu o Kona 1/17/10

Jan 17 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U O KONA 100-Mi

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kuliouou)

HTMC first hiked this steep & intimidating trail on January 18, 1920, and upon reaching the Ko’olau Summit, they gazed down on the empty sand dunes of Waimanalo, where they would soon be building our Clubhouse.  The view has changed since then, but it's still spectacular...and the trail is still steep !

Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.
